Bitterness in leadership is an issue that many people fail to recognize. As an ordained minister, I did not realize that bitterness had taken root in my heart due to unmet expectations. Disappointments in life can lead to feelings of resentment. I became aware that this bitterness had settled in my heart, causing me to become judgmental, critical, and focused on the negative rather than believing the best in others. Consequently, I found myself dissatisfied with everything around me.

The following signs of bitterness include unforgiveness, holding grudges, blaming others, maintaining a negative outlook, experiencing frustration and hopelessness, bottling up emotions, replaying past experiences, being quick to anger, lacking empathy, being easily offended, and feeling the need to confront others about their actions. If you are experiencing any of these signs, there is hope. Here are four strategies to overcome bitterness.

4 Ways to Overcome Bitterness

Pray: The Bible states in 1 Corinthians 11:28, But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and seek God’s mercy. The Bible states in 1 John 2:1-2, My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous righteous.

Humbling oneself is the key to achieving breakthroughs.

Meditate on the Word of God to help renew your mind in all situations. Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God
